A letter to people who feel awkward about themselves

Dear people who are still searching for themselves,

Conforming is great, sometimes
Fitting in with a crowd when your allowed
Nicely matching to societal rhymes
Making the people around you proud

It requires far less effort, far less thought
To simply try to fit into the image they depict
You'll gain the recognition you have sought
And managed to avoid all conflict

It feels, well, it feels good.
But that doesn't mean all is acting as it should.

Don't confuse people liking you for fitting in
With people liking you for being you
You don't have to purposely be different about everything
But you shouldn't always try to be the same too

Society is not neutral.
It is still a set combination of aesthetic and philosophy.
And it also changes.
So ask yourself, is this current arbitrary set of everything, well, me?

You will feel richer, if not at first
From learning when it's right to not conform
Because when you get through the worst
You will take some of your first steps since being born

So do not confuse ease-of-living with contentment
Do not let others taking a stand make you feel resentment
And heed the whole purpose of this simple letter
Conforming is great, but non-conforming can be even better

Love, your older selves.
